Baby's 1st Pumpkin

Our eldest son, Liam, with his hand & feet jack-o-lantern.

For those who are celebrating Halloween for the first time with their little ones, this is one way our family made our child's 1st Halloween a little bit more special. We used our child's little hands and feet as the template to create the face of their very 1st jack-o-lantern. It's a simple DIY project that can help you capture this special moment for your little one.

What you'll need:

  • Pumpkin

  • Marker

  • Pumpkin carving knife

  • Pumpkin seed scooper or a Spoon

Instructions:

  1. Trace your baby's hands and feet onto the outside of the pumpkin to create the jack-o-lantern's eyes and mouth.

  2. With your carving knife, cut around the stem of the pumpkin to create a big enough opening to fit your hand in. Set stem aside.

  3. Scoop out all the pumpkin seeds inside and make the inside as smooth as you can.

  4. Once clean, cut out the hands and toes you marked on the pumpkin. Note: When doing their feet, make sure to cut out the toes individually to create a more distinct looking foot.

  5. Once face is all carved out, insert any lighting you want (optional) then put stem back on top.

TIPS:

#1 - If your little one is being way too squirmy and uncooperative, you can wait until they fall asleep to trace their little hands & feet directly on the pumpkin. You can also trace them on a separate piece of paper (since a carved pumpkin is a lot harder to trace on than a smooth surface), and then tape it onto a pumpkin and use that as a stencil to trace out the pumpkin face.

#2 - If you don't want to actually carve a pumpkin and would rather have the keepsake last a bit longer (because carved pumpkins only last a couple days before it starts to decay), I would suggest to put paint on their hands and feet and just stamp them onto the pumpkin for a quick, but cute pumpkin design.

#3 - You can also trace their little hands and feet onto a styrofoam pumpkin. That way you can keep it for many years to come!

Now you can take all the precious photos of your child with their one-of-a-kind 1st pumpkin! Extra tip, dressing them in their costume during the photo session is extra cute! haha

I hope you all enjoy this project and are able to capture some great memories for your child's 1st Halloween. And even if it doesn't end up looking exactly how you hoped, don't worry about it. At least you can always use the bad pumpkin and turn it into something good, like pumpkin pie!
